2773. This is a lantern shield, it was in use during the Italian Renaissance (15th and 16th century Italy). This is a traditional Roman symbol called a Fasces, it symbolized the power and authority of magistrates, and suggested strength through unity; a single rod is easily broken, while the bundle is very difficult to break. It was used as a symbol of the Roman Republic in many circumstances, including being carried in processions, much the way a flag might be carried today. It can also be found on the tail side of a Mercury dime.
